Proposed Development of Ecotourism Operation at Dog Bark Rd, Port Arthur |
Further to the Notice of Proposed Development published in the Mercury, dated 26 March
2008, in relation to the proposed Ecotourism Operation at Dog Bark Rd, Port Arthur, the Tasmanian National
Parks Association (TNPA) lodged its opposition to this proposal.
The TNPAhas outlined the reasons for its opposition.

Rabbits and rats posing severe threat to Macquarie Island |
Rabbits and rats are posing a severe threat to World Heritage values on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island, as research reveals widespread and massive damage to terrestrial ecosystems. The Tasmanian National Parks Association has provided comment on the Draft Hartz Mountains Visitor Services Site Plan 2006.
It is the strong view of the TNPA that no new visitor facilities should be provided at the
road end in the Devils Backbone Visitor Services Site Precinct or anywhere else in the Hartz Mountains
Visitor Services Site at this point in time.
In our view the existing Waratah Lookout area should remain the focus
for picnicking and interpretation. Given this, we suggest that only the Waratah Lookout
area should be designated as being of Day Use Comfort standard and the rest of the VSS
is more appropriately designated as Day Use Getaway.

Proposed development at East Cockle Creek |
The State Government is in the process of giving away public land - your land - to a proposed development at East Cockle Creek in the State's far south. The land is within the Southwest National Park.

The TNPA has made a submission to prevent the environmentally insensitive redevelopment and expansion of accommodation facilities at Cynthia Bay on the shores of Lake St Clair (within the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, WHA). The proposal will result in a large increase in facilities within the National Park.

The current Tasmanian Wilderness WHA management plan provides very clear objectives and management prescriptions for accommodation and concessions within the WHA:
- To encourage the provision of accommodation in nearby townships and areas adjacent to the WHA (p132);
- If adequate facilities or services exist or can be developed outside the WHA that meet visitor needs, such facilities and services will not be provided as concessions within the WHA (p178).
These objectives are based on the premise that many of the experiences sought by visitors to the WHA and marketed by the tourism industry are based on the area's wilderness quality.
